This book of short stories has a theme. It discribes the same people. I would read a menu by Margaret Atwood. She is a fine writer and this book was no different. The characters are not always loveable or smart, but they are real.

This is the story of girlhood going into womanhood. The influences of an infatuation which is nourished by the one infatuated weaves its way into the story. It was a good read.

“She May Not Leave” by Fay Wheldon

This is an “O Henry” type of book. There were so many hints about the character of the person telling the story that the end should have been obvious. I missed it.

The story is about a yuppie couple who hires a young nannie when they have their first child. The couple is not married, but want their first child to be cared for as their careers continue.

Lost Lake by Philip Margolin

I like Philip Margolin. He always makes his characters interesting. This book was very contemporary. I kept on wondering how all was every going to be settled, but all things come to a smooth final conclusion.

This audio was a good one to listen to. The characters were rather tediously developed. The story had a bit of mystery, but that too was not a stretch. I read it because it was entertaining but not thought provoking.

“Rise and Shine” by Anna Quindlen

Two sisters are orphaned and live with their aunt and uncle who have no children. They both come to New York to work. One has risen quickly as the host of a morning program entitled “Rise and Shine.” She is married to a financial star and has a boy. The younger is single, has had many different jobs, and has finally settled on being an organizer of a women’s help center in a poor section of town. The morning show person slips and says two words not allowed to be spoken on TV. It is a scandal. She disappears. The story of these two sisters and how their lives change is captivating.

“Runaway” by Alice Munro.

Alice Munro is a wonderful writer. She asks more questions and doesn’t always answer them. I thought I was picking up a novel, but the book was short stories. Each could have been developed more to be a book, but they captured the style and integrity of a short story. I was captivated by each.

“No One to Trust” by Iris Johansen

This is a fast novel with a rather simplistic plot. A woman born in South America is raised to be “fighter”. She is captured and raped by a drug lord. She then has a child whom she loves. The drug lord learns of the child and wants him because this is the first time he has fathered a son. The story unravels as she tries to protect this boy as the drug lord with money and influence persues them both.

River Angel by A. Manette Ansay

Ambient, Wisconsin is a small town which is going through some radical transformation. Farms are dieing out replaced by modern housing on generous plots. There is an old tale of an angel who inhabits the river. A 10 year old boy looks for the angel and when he is pursued by some drunk teens who want to scare him it is said that he drown and was placed in a barn a mile away. Conflicting stories insue and a following comes of many people local and from afar celebrating a miracle.
